Bundaberg residents are being urged to join more than 27,000 Queenslanders taking part in this year’s Mater Chicks in Pink International Women’s Day Fun Run, presented by Queensland X-Ray.
While 23,000 people take part in the main Brisbane CBD event on Sunday March 9, more than 4,000 others have signed up to take part in their own ‘virtual’ fun runs across the state – and places are filling up fast.
In Bundaberg, more than 160 people have so far registered to take part in the 5K Your Way event run starting at The Basin, in Bargara, at 8am on Sunday 9 March.
A team of staff from Mater Private Hospital Bundaberg will be setting the pace, with all proceeds from the event supporting world-leading breast cancer research and services at Mater.
Hospital General Manager Catherine Hackney said the event was a special day for those whose lives have been affected by breast cancer.
“More than 20,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia every year, so this is a cause has touched almost every family in Bundaberg at some point,” Ms Hackney said.
“Joining the fun run is wonderful way to show your support for women with breast cancer and to help Mater Research’s dedicated researchers find new ways to fight the disease.”
Ms Hackney said around 200 people took part in last year’s event, walking and running the 5km course from The Basin to Nielsen’s Beach and back again.
“There was a big team from Mater, but most of the participants were people who just wanted to walk for women and support a great cause,” Ms Hackney said.
“One older woman who was fighting breast cancer couldn’t take part, but she and her husband came along just to cheer on everyone else. It was a special day – and a lot of fun too.
“There isn’t a better way to start your Sunday than a walk with friends and it’s all for a fantastic cause.”
