Bundilla Beach Transformation Begins

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin is taking its next steps to transform the Bundilla Beach area, with construction of the master plan’s Stage One works scheduled to commence soon.

Jaytex Construction has been awarded the contract for the works, which will see the car park parallel to Atkins Drive transformed into a green space; more public lighting and CCTV installed and additional recreation opportunities created through the installation of more toilets, BBQ tables and shelters.

Key feedback from the community was the desire for a new dog park, and this will be established as part of Stage One works.

City of Darwin Executive Manager Infrastructure Nik Kleine said the initial works were the first stage of achieving the longer-term vision for the Bundilla Beach area.

“The Bundilla Beach master plan was created after City of Darwin undertook extensive community and stakeholder engagement to capture a range of views about the future use of the area,” Mr Kleine said.

“The initial site preparation works will kick off in late September and are the first step in transforming Bundilla Beach to create a cool, green and natural space that will support leisure and recreation activities.

“This is the first stage of us achieving the community’s long-term aspirations for Bundilla Beach, which will see the area function as a biodiverse natural habitat with enhanced recreational opportunities and an expanded beachfront leisure area,” he said.

City of Darwin has invested $500,000, supported by a $3 million commitment from the Northern Territory Government, to develop the master plan and deliver the first stage of works.

During construction pedestrian and vehicular access to the foreshore area will be restricted to ensure safety. Pedestrians will be able to use the pathways around the lagoon area and beach access will be restricted to the boat ramp at the Ski Club. Vehicles will not be able to drive along Atkins Drive, from Conacher Street through to the Darwin Sailing Club while works take place.

Stage One works are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
