Buy Qld mandate supports ethical suppliers in Transport contracts

Queensland’s road and transport workers will be better supported by the Palaszczuk Government with new Buy Qld enforcements coming into effect from today.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the Government’s Ethical Supplier Mandate and Ethical Supplier Threshold were ensuring Queenslanders got a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.

“40,500 jobs will be supported from our record infrastructure budget,” Mr Bailey said.

“This latest wave in the roll out of our Ethical Supplier Mandate means that the Queenslanders working on our roads and public transport infrastructure get the fair treatment all Queensland tradies expect.

“Whether it’s training apprentices or paying super, our new guidelines set sturdy standards we expect suppliers to follow when they work on Transport and Infrastructure projects.”

Housing and Public Works Minister Mick de Brenni said that so far, the response has been positive.

“We’ve briefed over 2,000 government buyers and suppliers across Queensland about the commencement of the Mandate and Threshold.

“People have told us these changes are eliminating ‘cowboys’ from the industry and levelling the playing field for Queensland small business.

“The Mandate and Threshold are part of our procurement initiative Buy Queensland, through which we are maximising the social, economic and environmental benefits of Queensland Government spending.”

Mr de Brenni said the Palaszczuk Government is committed to engaging suppliers who deliver genuine, quality, secure ongoing jobs with fair pay and safe working conditions for Queenslanders.

Mr de Brenni said the Mandate, a demerit system for existing suppliers, is being rolled out progressively, with building construction and maintenance suppliers and subcontractors the first to come online last August.

It will now apply to Transport Infrastructure and Services from 1 October and be applied across the board in 2020.
