Byron Shire Council this week launched its Mayoral Flood Recovery Appeal with the aim of raising money to support organisations that are helping residents and businesses recover from the floods.

Initially the appeal will focus on allocating money to:

  • The Mullumbimby District Neighbourhood Centre and the Byron Community Centre to help with the purchase of community buses.
  • Improving telecommunications for communities in isolated areas by buying equipment to connect these communities in emergencies.

“I acknowledge there are many other flood appeals out there and this is because the need is so great in all communities in the Northern Rivers,” Byron Shire Mayor, Michael Lyon, said.

“This Mayoral Flood Recovery Appeal aims to specifically fill gaps whereby some organisations and worthy causes may not qualify for funding, or it simply is not enough,” Mayor Lyon said.

“Because the appeal is administered by Council we can direct the money to where it needs to go with every cent donated to be handed back for the good of the community,” he said.

“The establishment of this appeal is Council’s way of trying to make a small, but hopefully significant positive contribution, to some of our local community organisations who are doing outstanding work,” Mayor Lyon said.

People can make donations via a bank account managed by Council.

Donations are not tax-deductible.

People can donate at:
