Call for new members for ACT Women’s Advisory Council

The ACT Government is calling for Canberra women to nominate for membership of the 2019-2020 ACT Ministerial Advisory Council on Women. The council is an independent voice, able to raise and debate issues that matter to women in the ACT.

The ACT Government is committed to removing barriers to enable women and girls to reach their potential, contribute to innovation and ideas and to take up leadership positions.

The council plays a key role in advising the government on issues of importance to women in the ACT, and assists with work to improve the status of women in our community.

The Council is made up of women representing a range of backgrounds, including women with disability, women of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, women of different ages and locations across the ACT.

Members are selected for their expertise and experience in issues affecting women. Nominees for membership should have a sound knowledge of the interests and concerns of ACT women, and an ability to consult and represent on a wide range of issues.

During the latest term, the Council have provided advice to the me on a range of issues, including

  • Identifying the most vulnerable women impacted by COVID-19 and their specific needs;
  • Developing formal responses to ACT and federal Government consultation processes that relate to women’s and gender issues, such as the development of the Wellbeing Framework;
  • Identifying and responding to women’s rights and gender equality issues, such as sexism in advertising; and
  • Taking an active role in developing the Second Action Plan 2020-22, under the .
