The NSW Government is calling for nominations from Aboriginal people to fill up to six vacant positions on the NSW Aboriginal Fishing Trust Expenditure Committee (AFTEC).

Fisheries, Peter Turnell said this recruitment process will also create a talent pool to fill vacancies that may arise in the future.
“The Aboriginal Fishing Trust Fund is a component of the NSW Government’s broader program
supporting fishing access for the Aboriginal community,” Mr Turnell said.
“The Trust Fund aims to enhance, maintain and protect Aboriginal cultural fishing as well as provide fishing related economic opportunities for Aboriginal communities.
“AFTEC has the important role of making the initial assessment of applications for funds from the
Trust Fund, before the Aboriginal Fishing Advisory Council considers their comments and presents its views to the Minister for Agriculture for the final decision.”
Mr Turnell said the nomination process is hoping to attract members with knowledge and expertise in business and economic development.
“There is no denying the cultural importance of fishing to Aboriginal communities across NSW, so by recruiting these positions we will be able to continue to promote and protect cultural fishing and to develop businesses associated with fisheries resources across NSW through the Trust Fund,” Mr Turnell said.
