Call for Witnesses – Robbery – Fannie Bay

Northern Territory Police are calling for witnesses in relation to an alleged robbery in Fannie Bay.

Officers were called after a male taxi driver reported being assaulted at the Fannie Bay shopping centre at around 8:30pm last night.

The driver had been called to the shopping centre and was discussing the payment of the fare with three people, who then assaulted the driver.

The driver fled the taxi to take refuge in a nearby shop, however he was chased by one of the people who continued to assault him.

One of the trio left the scene, while the other two stole cash from the driver’s wallet and drove off in the taxi.

The taxi was driven through several suburbs and was involved in a crash with another vehicle in Winnellie where both offenders fled the scene.

A 31-year-old man is assisting police with their enquiries.

“We’re appealing for help from the public to find two of the people involved in this incident,” Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Malogorski said.

“The offenders are described as male, of Aboriginal appearance and aged between 20 and 30 years old.

“We’re also urging the driver of a red Mitsubishi Lancer that was struck by the stolen taxi near the Thirsty Camel on Benison Street in Winnellie to come forward and report the matter to our investigators.”

Anyone who has footage of or who saw the assault and theft of the taxi at Fannie Bay last night is asked to contact police.

Investigators are also keen to hear from anyone who saw or who has footage of the stolen taxi being driven around Darwin before it crashed into a red vehicle at Winnellie.

“If you have information, please call police on 131 444 or you can ring Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000,” Detective Senior Sergeant Malogorski said.
