Cannington community has its say in consultation: results announced

  • Consultation has concluded for public secondary schools in the Cannington area and results announced
  • No change to Sevenoaks Senior College, Cannington Community College and Cannington Community Education Support Centre
  • Yule Brook College will extend to offer the Big Picture program in Year 11 and 12 from 2022
  • Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery has today announced the results from a consultation process for public secondary schools in the Cannington area.

Based on the findings, there will be no change to Cannington Community College, Sevenoaks Senior College or Cannington Community Education Support Centre.

The community was supportive of change at Yule Brook College which will extend to provide the Big Picture program for Year 11 and 12 students.

It is anticipated this change will be implemented for the start of the 2022 school year.

The eight-week consultation involved school communities, including parents, prospective parents, local Aboriginal families, school boards and councils, and parents and citizens’ associations, from primary and secondary schools in the Cannington area and is the result they had called for.

Staff and other community members were also invited to provide their opinions at community forums and in an online survey.

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

“We received more than 600 responses from parents, students, staff and community members as part of this consultation process.

“I’m pleased to be able to take their opinions on board to make sure we’re providing families with schooling that best suits the needs of their children.

“We know that transitioning to a new school can be disruptive to a child’s learning, so I’m not surprised that parents would like Yule Brook College to provide education for students from Years 7 to 12.”

As stated by Cannington MLA Bill Johnston:

“I’m pleased by Minister Ellery’s decision to keep Cannington Community College, Cannington Community Education Support Centre and Sevenoaks Senior High School in their existing structure.

“I believe parents in our community know what’s best for their kids and their voices should be heard in any decision on schooling and this decision shows the Minister is listening to our community.

“That’s why I supported the campaign to keep these schools in their existing structure by presenting the community petition to Parliament.”

As stated by Thornlie MLA Chris Tallentire:

“I am thrilled that Yule Brook College will be offering the Big Picture program right through to Year 12. The hard working and dedicated staff at the College are well placed to ensure that our local students will be provided with a well targeted secondary education from Years 7 to 12.

“This provides Yule Brook College students the opportunity to complete their secondary education at the College, without the potential disruption of transitioning to a different school after Year 10.”
