Gippsland beef producers are in for a stimulating and entertaining day when they attend the East Gippsland Beef Conference at the Bairnsdale Sport and Convention Centre today.
Organisers have confirmed that the sixth annual beef conference has sold out and they are looking forward to welcoming farmers from across Gippsland and the state to the conference.
BetterBeef Project Leader Darren Hickey said that it is expected the opening plenary session will spark debate as Rob Hermann of Mercado and Simon Quilty of MLX test their forecasting skills in the Market Analysis Forum.
“The goal of the organising committee in planning the day’s program was to provide beef producers with new insights, the opportunity to network with like-minded people and some inspiring and challenging takehome messages.
“We’re certainly hoping that the opening session with Rob and Simon will provide valuable insights to attendees thinking about future opportunities,” he said.
Other presenters in the morning include Michael Crowley of Meat & Livestock Australia on ‘Innovation in a commercial beef enterprise’, Rob Inglis of Elders Australia on ‘Herd re-building’, and Brendan Cullen from the University of Melbourne discussing ‘On-farm adaptation to climate variability’.
The afternoon session will feature Nick Linden of Agriculture Victoria on ‘Driving pasture production’, Nuffield Scholar Claire Osborn-Booth on ‘Understanding finances and succession planning’, Maffra vet Stephanie Cullen on ‘Parasite resistant cattle’, Neil Moss of Scibus on ‘Setting up the farm for variable seasons’, and Jason Trompf of JT Agri-source on the ‘Value and benefits of a breeding objective’.
Delegates will also hear directly from their peers in a primary producer forum ‘Tactics in Tough Times’ where Charlie Maslin, David Read, and Brad and Jenny Smith will discuss their strategies for getting through the drought.
“For farmers in eastern Victoria, drought and dry seasonal conditions have been very challenging.
“The conference and conference dinner is a great opportunity for farmers to enjoy a social event with their peers and take some time to evaluate existing management practices and plan for the season ahead, whatever it may bring,” Mr Hickey said.
