The Andrews Labor Government is making it easier for locals and visitors to get out on the water at Cape Conran – with works to upgrade the popular boat ramp another step closer.
The contract to deliver the project has been awarded to local East Gippsland civil contracting and earthworks firm McInnes Earthmoving.
The works to upgrade the boat ramp include building a steeper and longer single-lane ramp, construction of a new apron at the top of the ramp and extending the jetty to provide more space for boats to be tied up.
To improve safety while launching and reduce the frequency of required maintenance, the steep design of the ramp will assist in minimising sand and kelp accumulation. Navigational issues will be combatted through marking hazardous areas of rock.
Plans to strengthen the existing retaining wall ramp will prevent boat and trailer damage and protect the site’s cultural heritage.
The project is being funded through the Labor Government’s $47.2 million investment into recreational boating.
Better Boating Victoria (BBV) has overseen the design and consultation process, with upgrade works to be managed by Parks Victoria.
Construction is expected to begin in September and be completed prior to the busy Christmas period.
The ramp is located 15 kilometres east of Marlo on the rugged Bass Strait coastline. It is popular among offshore fishers chasing prized species like swordfish in the deep blue as well as divers heading out to Beware Reef Marine Sanctuary.
