A carnival worker has been charged after vegetables and produce submitted for the Inverell Show were found smashed and smeared across walls of the exhibition hall earlier today.
Members of the Inverell Show Society were at the showground about 7am (Thursday 27 February 2020), when they saw the exhibition hall doors standing open.
When they entered the hall, they discovered pumpkins and other vegetables – which were part of the competition display – had been smashed while other produce had been smeared across the walls and floor. Some had been eaten.
Officers from New England Police District were called when a man was found asleep in the hall surrounded by smashed pumpkins.
The man woke and left the hall but was arrested in a toilet block nearby.
A 25-year-old man was taken to Inverell Police Station where he was charged with break and enter, commit serious indictable offence.
He appeared in Inverell Local Court today, pleading guilty, and was handed a nine-month Intensive Corrections Order.
The Inverell Show opens tomorrow (Friday 28 February 2020).
