Unions have blasted casual conversion laws as a complete failure at a 12 hour digital sit-in now underway at the University of Newcastle (UoN).
At UoN, just five of 2,300 casual staff were converted to full-time work.
Changes to the Fair Work Act earlier this year required employers to audit their casual workforces and determine whether any casual staff are required to be converted to ongoing work on the basis of being employed on a regular pattern of work over a long period of time.
