More than 1000 international students have started Charles Darwin University (CDU) courses this semester.
The new cohort are undertaking a mix of online classes and on-campus sessions offered across CDU campuses in the greater Darwin region, Alice Springs and Sydney.
This semester two intake breaks previous numbers of international students studying at CDU.
CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman said he is thrilled to welcome such a diverse and talented group of students to CDU, an increase of about 800 students from the same time last year.
“We have world-class education here on our doorstep in the NT, so this increase in student numbers isn’t a surprise,” Professor Bowman said.
“Our higher education courses have seen significant demand, and we are committed to providing an outstanding academic environment that nurtures growth, learning, and success for all our students.”
CDU’s recent trip the Indian subcontinent at the start of this year also contributed to the higher engagement of international students.
“Our trip to India, Nepal, and Bangladesh to attract and engage more students from the sub-continent into study pathways in the Territory was very effective,” Professor Bowman said.
“These new students have so much enthusiasm to become qualified and active members of the community, and contribute to the multicultural identity which we are very proud of. Their skills will hopefully help address worker shortages across major employment sectors.”
Orientation Week at CDU offers students a range of informative sessions and webinars covering library usage, careers, university life, and meet-and-greets with lecturers.
The newly revitalised Sydney campus received the biggest increase of international student numbers from three to 200.
CDU Associate Vice-Chancellor Dr Penelope Sweeting said welcoming students to the Sydney campus is always a highlight.
“We are impressed by these numbers and the remarkable diversity of our student body,” Dr Sweeting said.
“The Sydney CDU campus provides a unique educational experience that combines academic excellence with vibrant city life. We look forward to supporting and guiding our new students as they embark on their educational journey.”
In Darwin, the week will conclude with a social event at Casuarina campus on Friday, 7 July, where students will get to interact with their peers and be welcomed into the CDU community.
