Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Jo Palmer, has congratulated Natural Resource Management (NRM) organisations throughout Tasmania which are celebrating 20 years of operation this year.
Minister Palmer said NRM North, NRM South and the Cradle Coast NRM play a key role in delivering both state and national environmental and agricultural priorities.
“Established in 2003, the state’s three NRM organisations provide advice to the Tasmanian Government, on matters relating to land, water and our biodiversity assets,” Minister Palmer said.
“All three NRM organisations deliver strategic priorities for their regions to support healthy soils, farmland, rivers and other natural resources which underpin our world class agricultural sector and our environment.”
The Rockliff Liberal Government is a strong supporter of NRM North, NRM South and the Cradle Coast NRM, and last year committed to an increase in funding of $4.2 million over three years from 2022-23 through to 2024-25 to the organisations.
In total, these funds result in the delivery of approximately $467,000 to each region each year.
“State Government funding supports administration, development and implementation of strategic projects, and community engagement, and provides for each regional NRM organisation to leverage significant additional investment into our State,” Minister Palmer said.
Current projects include those addressing:
- Soil health and productivity
- Drought resilience and climate change
- Flora and fauna pest species management
- Protection and conservation of key threatened species
- Wetland protection, river health improvement and seagrass restoration; and
- An NRM Aboriginal Traineeship Program.
“I would like to extend my appreciation to all the NRM staff and volunteers and acknowledge the great work they have done over the past 20 years and will continue to do for many years to come,” Minister Palmer said.
“I wish to thank outgoing NRM South Chair Andrew Scanlon for the work he has done representing southern Tasmania and welcome new Chair Bob Rutherford.
“I would also like to acknowledge the leadership shown by the NRM North Chair Pamela Allan and NRM Cradle Coast Chair Peter Voller in the community.”
