As we celebrate International Day of the Midwife on 5 May, it’s a great opportunity to spotlight the journey of new midwife graduate Madeline Boyce, who brings passion and a fresh perspective to her role at Nepean Hospital.
Madeline Boyce, new midwife graduate at Nepean Hospital
With four years of experience as a registered nurse, Madeline decided to take the leap into a new career in midwifery. Her decision to upskill was fuelled by a pivotal experience during her nursing rotation on a postnatal ward, where she discovered her calling to support women through the transformative journey of motherhood.
“Most women will remember the midwife that was there for them when they delivered their baby. I think that’s such a memorable role, which makes me feel really inspired to come to work every day,” says Madeline.
Madeline’s favourite part of her role is supporting first-time mums through labour and birth, and during the postnatal period by providing education and being there for the women at such a memorable time.
She also enjoys the opportunity to provide holistic care and education to expectant and new mothers.
“It’s so important to create a safe space for mothers to feel empowered and valued during one of the most important times of their lives,” says Madeline.
Looking ahead, Madeline is interested in deepening her knowledge in lactation support with the goal of becoming a lactation consultant. She recognises the importance of supporting breastfeeding mothers, especially at a time when breastfeeding rates are declining.
Madeline encourages others who are considering a career in midwifery to take the leap.
“It’s such a great profession that can be so versatile, enabling you to work in your area of interest,” says Madeline.
