The coming week will see nurses and midwives celebrated around the ACT with International Day of the Midwife today and International Nurses Day on 12 May.
Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the week is a wonderful opportunity to recognise the efforts of the more than 8000 nurses and midwives who are the backbone of our health system.
“It feels particularly meaningful as we reflect on the immense contribution of our health workers during the pandemic. They have kept, and continue to keep, our health system running in the face of intense demand,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.
“One of the highlights of the week is always the ACT Government’s Annual Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards, which will be held on 12 May.
“This year we welcomed a record number of nominations from health workers, acknowledging the work of their peers in the professional excellence categories, including clinical practice, education, leadership, management and research/quality improvement.
“I’m really looking forward to finding out who the inaugural winner of the new consumer recognition award is. This award was launched so members of the public could acknowledge a nurse or midwife who provided them with exceptional care.
“I know Canberrans will join me in wishing all of our nurses and midwives a happy week, and thanking them for their work keeping us healthy and cared for,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.
