Sarah Courtney,Minister for Health
Today is International Day of the Midwife and we celebrate the incredible role midwives play in our community.
This year’s theme is ‘celebrate, demonstrate, mobilise and unite’, all special skills midwives bring to their job every day.
The celebration is even more significant this year as the World Health Organisation has designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.
As both Minister for Health and Minister for Women, today is a great opportunity to acknowledge the significant role midwives have in improving the health and wellbeing of women.
Together, midwives enjoy the unique opportunity to build meaningful relationships with women and their families, and develop trust – a key element of pregnancy, birth and parenting.
While coronavirus prevents us from coming together for our traditional celebrations, this special day is recognised by the Tasmanian Government as a significant day for all midwives.
Today we recognise and celebrate the important work of midwives and thank all Tasmanian midwives for their dedication and commitment to Tasmanian women and the community at large.
