The Centre for Freshwater Ecosystems was officially launched at La Trobe University’s Albury-Wodonga Campus on 20 February.
Led by La Trobe Professor Nick Bond – a highly-regarded expert in freshwater ecology and water management – , brings together a wealth of research expertise in freshwater science and water management to support sustainable management and restoration to ensure the long-term health of river ecosystems and surrounding catchments, floodplains and wetlands.
“Now, more than ever, it’s crucial that the biodiversity of our complex and fragile freshwater ecosystems is fully understood, to ensure effective and sustainable management,” Professor Bond said.
“Ecological and environmental research conducted by our teams of scientists at The Centre for Freshwater Ecosystems plays a vital role in underpinning and informing water policy – helping protect and maintain our freshwater systems for future generations.”
The launch event also marked the release of the Centre’s , including its stated mission to lead the way to healthy and sustainable freshwater ecosystems through innovation and excellence in research and education.
The Centre is a strategic initiative of La Trobe and operates commercially to conduct high impact scientific research. It builds on the long legacy of La Trobe research represented by the former Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre.
The Centre for Freshwater Ecosystems maintains strong links with regional communities and with a diverse range of industry stakeholders and other research organisations, with an ongoing focus on high impact research and education.
