The turning of sod today at Campbell Barracks marks another major milestone in the delivery of the Australian Defence Force’s Land 121 Vehicle Acquisition Program – this programme is vital in modernising the Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force vehicle fleet.
Through the Land 121 Stage 5B Facilities Project the Government has allocated $150 million for infrastructure to support the new vehicle fleet, including a $34 million investment at Campbell Barracks to construct a vehicle workshop, hardstand and shelters.
The Assistant Minister for Defence, The Hon Andrew Hastie MP officiated the sod-turning,
“The modernisation of our Defence vehicle fleet is critical to ensuring our ADF and especially our special forces such as the SASR are mission ready”
This project will ensure that our ADF are able to meet the protection, network, mobility and lift capability requirements of a changing battlefield,” Assistant Minister Hastie said.
“Importantly, this project demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment to equipping our soldiers while maximising the opportunities for local industry.
“The program of works aims to capture over 85 per cent local industry engagement from the greater Perth region and 100 per cent from within Western Australia, including Indigenous workforce participation of 8 per cent.
“This creates opportunities for Western Australian small and medium businesses, local contractors and ensures our ADF are supported with world class facilities.”
The new facilities being delivered at Campbell Barracks will replace ageing infrastructure and expand capacity to accommodate the new vehicles and meet the operating, training and maintenance requirements to support the Special Air Service Regiment.
Works at Campbell Barracks commenced in July 2021 with completion expected in mid-2024.
