Champa Patel highlights climate agenda as Indonesia goes to the polls

The Climate Group

With elections being held in Indonesia on 14 February, Climate Group urges parties to continue cutting greenhouse gas emissions and to focus on environmental concerns.

Dr Champa Patel, Executive Director of Governments and Policy at Climate Group, said:

“As Indonesia comes to the polls today after a decade of economic growth, it will be interesting to see how climate concerns are reflected in the choices of voters. What has been noticeable is the lack of detail from prospective candidates on how to tackle these issues. Yet, we know from a recent survey by that citizens do prioritise environmental concerns.

“Despite this relative silence, there has positive progress in the country. Indonesia’s Just Energy Transition Partnership has seen it commit to cut carbon dioxide emissions significantly by 2030 and there is a target to increase renewable energy in power generation to 44%.

“As one of the world’s biggest greenhouse gas emitters, and with concerns about the huge damage done by palm oil plantations, all eyes will be focused on the incoming government and the actions it chooses to take.”
