Two sections of La Trobe Street will be closed to motorists and trams this weekend as crews spend four days improving safety and reliability for passengers.
Crews will replace tracks, renew overhead power lines, install drainage and pour concrete and asphalt between 10pm on Friday, 1 May and 5am on Wednesday, 6 May.
During the works, while City Circle services will run a shortened horseshoe route between Spencer Street/Flinders Street and Parliament Station.
Motorists will have no access to La Trobe Street between Queen and Elizabeth streets and Swanston and Russell streets for the duration of the works and are advised to use Victoria Street as an alternative route.
La Trobe Street between Elizabeth and Swanston streets will still be accessible, including the Melbourne Central carpark.
Footpaths will be open to pedestrians in both sections, but on-street parking and bicycle lanes will be restricted in both work areas. The works will not impact surrounding businesses.
The round-the-clock Yarra Trams works will focus on track and overhead line renewal between Queen and Elizabeth streets and Swanston and Russell streets.
The works will deliver improved comfort and reliability for passengers, reducing the risk of faults on the network.
All Yarra Trams construction sites follow Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus guidelines where physical distancing is implemented wherever possible and personal protective equipment is used.
