A man will face court charged with the assault of police in the Illawarra.
About 8pm yesterday (Monday 10 February 2025), officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District were called to Holm Place, Shellharbour, following reports of a concern for welfare.
Police will allege the man who was in the carpark became aggressive and threw a lit cigarette and plastic bottle towards a female senior constable and female constable.
When the man allegedly resisted, further officers attended to provide assistance and OC spray and Tasers were deployed to effect his arrest.
Police will allege the man kicked, punch and spat at the officers and allegedly tried to bite the senior constable’s leg.
The 28-year-old man was taken to Shellharbour Hospital for treatment before being taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.
He has been charged with hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, two counts of assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, and two counts of destroy or damage property.
He was refused bail and is due to appear in Wollongong Local Court today (Tuesday 11 February 2025).
Police will also allege the man damaged a police truck while being taken to the police station.
The two officers were taken to Shellharbour Hospital to be checked; they’ve been treated for cuts and bruises.
