Charges laid as critical incident investigation continues after crash near Gundagai, NSW

A driver has been charged as a critical incident investigation continues following a crash in the state’s Riverina Region.

Just before 4pm on Friday (15 October 2021), officers from Riverina Police District received reports of a Ford Falcon travelling along the Hume Highway at Tarcutta, in excess of the sign posted speed limit.

The Ford was sighted by Traffic and Highway Patrol officers travelling northbound, near the Old Hume Highway intersection at Tumblong, at alleged speeds of between 178 and 188 kmph.

Police travelled northbound but lost sight of the Ford before it was seen to leave the roadway and crash into a tree about 10km south of Gundagai.

The driver – a 30-year-old man – was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.

Just after 12pm today (Sunday 17 October 2021), detectives attended the hospital and arrested the man.

He was taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station and charged with drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, P2 driver exceed speed more than 45 km/h, and negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm).

The Albury man was granted conditional bail to appear at Wagga Wagga Local Court on Wednesday 1 December 2021.

A critical incident team from Murrumbidgee Police District established Strike Force Barrabool to investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident

That investigation will be subject to an independent review.
