A man charged with assaulting police whilst resisting arrest in Sydney’s Inner West last week has been charged with additional offences after police reviewed CCTV of the incident.
About 3.10pm on Thursday 2 May 2019, officers attached to Inner West Police Area Command observed a man walking along Parramatta Road, near Bridge Road, Camperdown, carrying a knife.
The 25-year-old man began to run from police who pursued on foot.
The man stopped and allegedly assaulted police, throwing punches before OC spray was deployed.
He was arrested with the assistance of further officers and a member of the public, before he was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment to OC spray exposure.
He was later taken to Newtown Police Station and charged with custody of a knife in public place, assault police (x4), and resist arrest, and was refused bail to face Newtown Local Court on Friday 3 May 2019.
One of the male sergeants was taken to the same hospital for treatment to minor abrasions and exposure to OC spray, and was released shortly after.
During the course of the investigation, police reviewed CCTV vision which depicts the man with a knife allegedly concealed under his work shirt as he assaulted the officers.
Police now allege the man attempted to stab the officers in the head and face.
He has now been charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (attempted), and armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.
He is next due to appear before Newtown Local Court on Tuesday 18 June 2019.
