Cheaper ferry travel to Rottnest Island for seniors this winter

  • Travel to Rottnest Island to be cheaper for seniors
  • $30 return ferry fares available for WA Seniors Card holders until August, saving at least $50
  • Further builds on initiatives implemented by WA Government to make access to Rottnest Island more affordable

Seniors will be able to travel to Rottnest Island for just $30 throughout winter, as part of a new Government initiative to continue making the tourist hotspot more accessible for Western Australians.

The capped fare will apply to all Western Australians with a WA Seniors Card, saving at least $50 per person.

Bookings open this Thursday 20 June for travel from Thursday 27 June through to Sunday 18 August.

The cheaper travel further builds on other initiatives introduced by the WA Government to make the island paradise more affordable and accessible for Western Australians.

This includes the overnight school camp subsidy for lower socioeconomic schools during Term 3, 2024, which potentially saves families of WA school students over $80 per child for an overnight camp.

It also builds on a raft of measures available for Western Australians with a WA Seniors Card, including:

$400 Household Electricity Credit, plus a further $300 from the Australian Government taking total credit to $700;

$107 Seniors Cost of Living Rebate;

Around $180 in vehicle licence fee discounts ;

25 per cent rebate, up to $100, for both local government rates and water service charges;

$675 Regional Pensioner Travel Card for eligible pensioners living in the regions; and

Free public transport during off-peak.

Seniors with eligible concessions are able to access additional Government support on top of that, including the $334 Energy Assistance Payment, 50 per cent rebate up to $750 on local government rates and 50 per cent rebate up to $600 for water service charges.

As stated by Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti:

“Rottnest Island is one of our most iconic tourism destinations and we want more Western Australians to be able to access and enjoy our island paradise.

“There’s still so much to do and enjoy during the cooler months on the island, so it’s a great opportunity for WA seniors to get out and about, and save at least $50 on their travel.

“We’re very keen to continue making the island more affordable and accessible for locals, and this program adds to other measures we’ve implemented to get more Western Australians to experience the island, including, of course, the school camp subsidy for students at lower socioeconomic schools.”

As stated by Seniors and Ageing Minister Don Punch:

“WA Seniors Card holders already enjoy an extensive range of benefits across Western Australia, and I’m thrilled to be adding travel to Rottnest Island to the list.

“Rottnest Island is a favourite holiday destination for many Western Australians and now seniors will benefit further with capped ferry travel until August to complement this.”
