Former Australian Defence Force members Sharon Bown and Daniel Keighran VC have both been re-appointed to the Council of the Australian War Memorial for three year terms.
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester said the re-appointments were important for providing stability and continuity to the Council as it navigates the first stage of its $500 million redevelopment.
“Both Sharon Bown and Daniel Keighran continue to expand their knowledge, skills and experience, providing diversity and value to the Council and I thank them for their contribution to-date and congratulate them on their re-appointments,” Mr Chester said.
“Both are members of the Roll of Honour Committee of Council and are committed as advisory members to research, establish policy and provide recommendations for additions to the Roll of Honour, or to seek alternatives for recognition.”
Sharon Bown is a champion for recognising the work of women and highlighting their service and contribution to Australia’s Defence Force. She regularly MC’s the Last Post Ceremony, volunteers as a guide in the galleries sharing her knowledge and experience with visitors, and attends many events and ceremonies as a representative of the Council.
As a younger veteran and now an active reservist, Daniel Keighran has been supportive and instrumental in the committee’s work to consider those deaths as a result of suicide following deployment on operational service.
Mr Chester said the work of the Council was crucial in raising national awareness of the service and sacrifice offered by our current and former serving community and their families.
“I thank all Council members for their dedication and hard work in preserving and sharing our military history,” Mr Chester said.
