Chief Commissioner sets challenge for Victoria Police

Victoria Police’s Chief Commissioner is challenging his officers to draw on their creative abilities as they join in celebrations for the International Day of People with Disability.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton has challenged police across Victoria to mark the day, which takes place today (3 December), by engaging with their community in innovative and exciting ways.

Some of the activities on offer include dunking Geelong police officers in a water tank and an all-abilities sporting day in Mornington.

Deputy Commissioner Rick Nugent applauded the efforts of the organisation ahead of today’s special event to acknowledge employees, police stations and work units as part of the annual Public Advocates Award.

The Deputy Public Advocate, John Chesterman, will present the annual awards at the event at the Victoria Police Centre.

“We are proud to take part in the annual Public Advocates Awards every year, which recognises police employees, police stations or work units that have provided outstanding service to people with disability,” DC Nugent said.

“It is great to see that many of our employees have taken up the challenge to host events that showcase our commitment to meaningful engagement and inclusion of people living with disability.

“Engaging in local activities speaks volumes in showing our support and is an important way for police to make important connections and strengthen trust with their local communities.

“Victoria Police continues to strive towards ensuring people with disabilities feel valued, safe and supported in all their interactions with police.”

The event will conclude with the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, which plays a key role in promoting awareness, opportunity and respect for people living with intellectual disability and raising funds for Special Olympics Victoria.
