The revitalisation of Broome’s historic and nationally iconic Chinatown precinct is complete, marking the start of a new era for one of Western Australia’s most loved towns.
Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan joined Shire of Broome representatives and the local community this evening to officially open the $15.55 million Chinatown Revitalisation Stage 2 project.
The McGowan Government invested $23.05 million into the two-stage redevelopment of Chinatown, partnering with the Shire of Broome to deliver the major overhaul of central Broome.
Paying homage to the cultural influences of Chinese, Afghan, Malay, Japanese and Aboriginal people, the revitalisation has restored Chinatown to its rightful place at the heart of Broome’s economy and community.
Stage 2 works included streetscape enhancements on Short Street, Carnarvon Street North and Napier Terrace, to match the works completed in Stage 1, as well as public artwork, upgrades to visitor centre amenities, and the refurbishment of Streeters Jetty.
Local contractors were awarded more than 80 per cent of the Stage 2 works by value, and Aboriginal employment exceeded more than 20 per cent of hours worked.
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
“Chinatown plays an important role in the history of Broome and the Kimberley, and sits at the heart of this beautiful town.
“Through our more than $23 million investment, we have breathed new life into Chinatown, restoring Chinatown to its rightful place as one of Australia’s great regional precincts.
“In keeping with Broome’s standing in Australian iconography, the quality and attention to detail delivered in this project has been second to none, ensuring the Chinatown redevelopment will stand the test of time.”
As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D’Anna:
“Chinatown has always been an important part of Broome’s multiculturalism and history.
“Its revitalisation pays homage to the local families and cultures on which its foundations were built.
“Visitors will be able to walk through our Chinatown and be educated on its rich history whilst also indulging in our present day artists displays and support local small businesses.”
