Christmas funding to boost connections across Townsville

Not for profit organisations across Townsville can now register for funding to host a Christmas event this festive season.

Townsville City Council is offering up to 25 prizes of $1000 to not-for-profit organisations to help spread cheer, reduce loneliness and foster compassion by bringing the community together with its Christmas Together in the Community initiative.

Mayor Troy Thompson said the funding would be used to foster connections between Townsville residents.

“Christmas should be the most wonderful time of the year, but for many people it’s the most lonely time of the year,” Cr Thompson said.

“Having strong social connections is one of the hallmarks of a healthy city. Council is committed to making Townsville a city where everyone feels a sense of belonging, just one of the reasons we’re running Christmas Together in the Community this year.

“Not-for-profit organisations can apply now for up to $1000 of funding to host an event to encourage connections and promote compassion and kindness this Christmas.

“To apply, all you need to do is tell Council how you will bring people who may feel isolated or those in need of support together, connect with your community and reduce loneliness this festive season.”

Cr Thompson said while Council would continue to support not-for-profit organisations through the Christmas Together in the Community program, the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal initiative was undergoing a refresh.

“There is planning underway for a new program in 2025, extending Council and the community’s support beyond the holiday season,” he said.

“Christmas is already an expensive time of year, and with the current cost of living pressures people are feeling the pinch.

“By introducing a year-round program, people will have the ability to give at a time that best suits them and the appeal can target broader community needs in areas like emergency relief, housing, mental health, and food support, ensuring that help is available when it’s needed most.

“I am deeply grateful for the generosity residents have shown over the years and look forward to continuing the tradition of giving in a way that creates sustained, meaningful impact throughout the year.”

Applications for Christmas Together in the Community close at 11:59pm on Sunday 17 November.
