Residents of Ninth Avenue are set to bring joy to our local community this festive season with their annual Christmas lights display.
“The Council is delighted that Ninth Avenue residents will once again adorn their homes with decorations and turn on the lights for their annual Christmas celebration—a popular attraction during the festive season,” says Mayor Robert Bria.
More than 70 houses along Ninth Avenue from Battams Road, Royston Park to Stephens Terrace, St Peters will light up and shine bright from Tuesday 1 December.
“All residents of Ninth Avenue participating in this event should be proud of their contribution towards building a strong community spirit not only in their neighbourhood, but across our City.
“This Christmas, the lights will be a sign of hope and source of happiness after what has been a challenging year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Mayor Bria says that the Council understands the need for the community to remain vigilant in reducing the spread of COVID-19, particularly given the large numbers of people expected to visit Ninth Avenue in the coming weeks.
“The Council’s Manager, WHS & Risk and I met with residents to determine the measures required to ensure the community’s safety and well-being during the event and with current Government health advice in mind.”
These measures include:
- street signage encouraging physical distancing and continuous movement along the street
- footpath signage encouraging pedestrians to walk in one direction
- signage encouraging people who are feeling unwell to view the lights from their cars so as to minimise contact with others.
“Both the Council and local residents were keen to determine a way in which the Christmas lights could go ahead in a safe and responsible way while meeting the appropriate COVID-19 guidelines.
“By following the above guidelines, every visitor can have a wonderful time and go home with great memories.”
Spokesperson for Ninth Avenue residents, Kevin Naughton, says this year’s display will be the most significant in its 20 year history.
“Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and with support from the Council, we are aiming to deliver a free, family-friendly and safe Christmas experience.
“What started as a couple of houses has grown to more than 70 and evolved into a must-see event in Adelaide, enjoyed by thousands over the festive season.”
The lights will be on display from 1 December 2020 until 1 January 2021.
