City hosts public discussion on continuing vision for more liveable, sustainable and diverse Sydney

Government and industry leaders will come together with Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore and London Mayor Sadiq Khan and for an open talk on the transformation of cities.

The talk will centre on Sustainable Sydney 2030-2050, Continuing the Vision – the City’s long-term plan to navigate beyond the pandemic with increased space for people, greenery and climate action, improved equity and transport, and cultural identity.

Joining Mayor Sadiq Khan, speaking live from London, and Lord Mayor Clover Moore to discuss the transformative, city-shaping projects featured in the plan will be:

  • The Hon Matt Kean MP, NSW Treasurer and Minister for Energy
  • Nicki Hutley – Councillor, Climate Council, Economics Consultant, Social Outcomes
  • Wesley Enoch – playwright, artistic director and Indigenous Chair, Creative Industries, QUT
  • Ronni Kahn AO – OzHarvest CEO
  • Gabriel Metcalf – Committee for Sydney CEO
  • Ken Maher AO – HASSELL Fellow and President Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council

The event is the first CityTalk for 2022 – a series of free City of Sydney hosted talks that are designed to inspire, inform and engage Sydneysiders by examining significant local, national and global issues.

The talk will be facilitated by Patricia Karvelas, presenter and host, ABC News and Radio ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he was looking forward to being part of the conversation and sharing his aspirations for cities that are green, global and connected.

“I share the City of Sydney’s vision for a global city that is forward-thinking, safer and greener – this is about putting forward a bold and positive vision to renew one of the world’s greatest cities,” Mayor of London and chair of C40 Cities, Sadiq Khan said.

“There are synergies with my manifesto for London that I will look forward to sharing at the talk, particularly around pandemic recovery, affordable housing and climate change.

“I have been clear that climate action and economic recovery must go hand in hand. This will require record investment and coordinated action from everyone – cities, businesses, national governments and communities – to truly turn the tide. But cities can’t do it all alone. ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Governments need to unlock the powers and funding needed to meet local targets, which will help deliver national targets too.”

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said she was proud to invite Sydneysiders to join the discussion with thought leaders on the future vision for their city.

“As we get set to extend our long-term vision to 2050, increasing our targets and pushing ourselves harder to ensure Sydney’s liveability, sustainability and diversity, this CityTalk is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the experience of local and global leaders,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Our city, like others around the world, faces a climate emergency, recovery from the impact of the pandemic and the long road to recovery that must have inclusion and social justice at the fore.

“Our community is critical to discussions about the city’s development – they have told us what they want, we have listened and this is a shared vision for the future.”
