City of Darwin charges ahead with new electric vehicles and charging stations

Darwin City Council

We’re charging towards a greener future with the addition of two new electric vehicle’s (EV) to our fleet, and the installation of two new EV fast-charging stations at our Mitchell Street carpark.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we aim to achieve net-zero Council-controlled greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and support the Darwin community in reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

With the Australian EV industry still in its early stages, a lack of public and convenient fast-charging stations has been a challenge. We’re pleased to partner with Evie Networks to have two fast charging stations installed at City of Darwin’s Mitchell Street off-street carpark.

This location was carefully chosen for its accessibility, safety, proximity to amenities, and suitable power connections. Evie’s chargers support all EV types. Only drivers of older model Teslas (model S and X), will be required to bring a charging adaptor, which is common practice for owners of these models at most public charging stations.

We hope City of Darwin’s support for the initiative will encourage the uptake of EV’s and support the growing number of Australian businesses and individuals looking to greener models of transport.

We’ve also added to our City of Darwin pool vehicle fleet and are pleased to have introduced two new Kia Niro Electric Vehicles. Aligned with our Climate Emergency Strategy, these energy-efficient vehicles will contribute to reducing our operational emissions.

Together, we are proud to be working towards a cool, clean, and green city!
