City of Darwin Commences Road Condition Survey

The Darwin Community will see an unusual ‘back to the future’ style vehicle on Darwin’s roads and streets as City of Darwin conducts a road condition survey.

Council owns 461.8km of road across the municipality and the road survey, conducted every 4 years, provides a snapshot of the condition of these roads.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said “The Network Survey vehicle looks very space-age and is collecting valuable information about the condition of every road, street and avenue across Darwin.”

“This information is vital as the data collected informs our annual budgets and work programs.”

“Our roads are subjected to pretty harsh conditions in Darwin – from extreme heat to heavy rain – so it is critical we keep on top of any changes and respond to these in a timely manner.”

“Doing so ensures all road works are well planned and budgeted for, and most importantly the safety of all road users is maintained.”

The Network Survey Vehicle is a large van fitted with a laser and camera system on top of and at the front of the vehicle. The vehicle will be moving speeds lower than sign posted, travelling in one direction down all City of Darwin roads over a 10 day period.

The cameras are aimed at the roadway and will only capture road condition information, no personal data or photography.
