City of Darwin continues to strive to be a clean and environmentally responsible city through its ongoing resource recovery efforts.
Several initiatives have recently been put in place to reduce waste and support the community in reusing and recycling old products.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said City of Darwin was dedicated to achieving better environmental outcomes.
“As part of our Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy, we are putting measures in place to reduce waste sent to landfill and help to achieve a circular economy,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“We are continuously working to modernise our collection systems and re-invigorate our recycling sector.
“We have installed a cardboard compacter at Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility which will reduce our carbon footprint by reducing truck movements required for cardboard recycling.
“We have also increased our domestic battery recycling capability and can now accept lithium batteries including smaller domestic batteries such as button batteries.
“The batteries are collected and recycled which helps prevent landfill fires caused by incorrect disposal of batteries in the general waste stream.
“City of Darwin was also recently named the ‘Northern Territory Top Collector’ as part of Mobile Muster’s mobile phone recycling program, for the second year in a row.
“As a result of the community’s collective efforts, 18kg of mobile phones have been collected and recycled, keeping these materials out of landfill.
“As a community, we have come a long way in accepting the need to reduce, re-use and recycle more of our resources, but there is much more we can do,” he said.
City of Darwin will continue to advocate and collaborate with all levels of government, businesses and organisations for the development of a resilient and sustainable resource recovery sector.
The aim is to attract and support greater reuse, recycling, resource recovery and re-manufacturing throughout the greater Darwin area.
