As part of City of Darwin’s Play Space Strategy 2023 – 2030, which aims to make Darwin a safe, liveable and healthy city by investing in play spaces, Council has identified three local playgrounds that will soon be upgraded.
Playgrounds at Clarke Crescent, Rapid Creek; McMillans Green Belt, Anula; and Easther Park, Coconut Grove will be replaced.
City of Darwin Chief Executive Officer Simone Saunders said the new play spaces will be an asset for the local community.
“The enhanced playgrounds will feature new play equipment, rubber soft fall surfaces and artificial shade, meaning they can be enjoyed safely all year round,” Ms Saunders said.
“Play is essential for children’s development and can help build physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills.
“Quality play spaces can help in bringing local communities together and serving as a meeting place for everyone to enjoy,” she said.
There are 155 play spaces throughout the Darwin municipality, including 121 playgrounds and 16 exercise stations.
“We engaged with the Darwin community to develop our Play Space Strategy, which guides the type of equipment and ancillary features for the different levels of play spaces across the city,” Ms Saunders said.
“Our community told us they want play spaces that incorporate heat mitigation strategies and increase shade, which we are confident these new play spaces will deliver.”
“This is a $300,000 project and we are looking forward to seeing the final playgrounds, which I’m sure will look fantastic once complete.”
Local provider Hardy Landscaping has been awarded the contact with construction expected to commence in May 2024 and works expected to be completed by 30 June 2024.
