The City of Greater Geelong is proud to announce its support for First Nations Cultural Heritage projects through the awarding of grants totalling $89,332.
These grants aim to empower and celebrate the rich cultural traditions of the First Nations people within our community.
Three projects, each contributing to the preservation and promotion of First Nations cultural heritage, were successful.
Bellarine Training and Community Hub are set to receive $10,000 for planning for a First Nations Garden. This initiative seeks to create a culturally sensitive and inclusive community space in consultation with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation. The space will serve as a hub for education, celebration, and engagement with nature.
Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation will receive $41,332 for the ‘Journey on Wadawurrung Country’ (JOWC) project. Through photographic portraits and audio recordings of Wadawurrung Elders and Traditional Owners, this project will share important stories and perspectives, fostering greater understanding and appreciation of First Nations culture.
Finally, Wathaurong Aboriginal Cooperative were awarded $38,000 for the Wathaurong Dance Group. This project provides a safe and supportive environment for children to connect with their culture through traditional dance. With the creation of Women’s and Men’s dance performances, the aim is to share the rich story of Aboriginal people with the wider Djilang community.
