The City of Hobart welcomes the recent release of the Senate Inquiry report into funding of Australian Antarctic Division (AAD).
Of interest is the recommendation calling for the Australian and Tasmanian Governments and the AAD to work to swiftly resolve the redevelopment of Wharf 6 at Macquarie Point, which is a significant step forward in advancing the Antarctic infrastructure, a cause we have long championed for through our ongoing advocacy efforts.
We believe resolving funding and contract provisions with TasPorts in an equitable manner is essential for the sustainable growth of our Antarctic sector.
“The City of Hobart has been steadfast in its commitment to supporting the Antarctic sector and advocating for necessary infrastructure upgrades,” Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.
“The release of the Senate Inquiry report marks an important step in our collective efforts to strengthen our Antarctic Gateway and propel our city as a global centre of excellence in Antarctic research and operations.”
The Antarctic sector holds immense significance for Hobart, supporting 950 jobs and contributing approximately $183 million to Tasmania’s economy annually.
Our port infrastructure, home to the icebreaker RSV Nuyina and the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), serves as the cornerstone of this vital sector.
