Logan City Council continues to work closely with residents and business owners as the city braces for major flooding over the next 24 hours.
While rainfall eased today, up to 320mm was recorded in some catchments since 9am yesterday (Sunday).
Flood peaks are still to come on the Logan and Albert Rivers.
The Logan River at Maclean Bridge (in the City’s south-west) is at 19.8 metres and rising and is likely to peak around 4pm today, exceeding levels recorded in 2017 (ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie). The river is likely to remain above the major flood level (16 metres) for several days.
Major flooding is also occurring along the Albert River, with river levels above those recorded in 2013 (ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald).
Emergency alerts were issued for 16 suburbs and Council has door knocked residents in streets mostly likely to be impacted by floodwater.
City of Logan Mayor Darren Power urged the community to remain informed and take all necessary precautions to stay safe.
“Rainfall has eased but this is no time for complacency,” Cr Power said.
“Parts of the city are already isolated, and we expect more locations to be cut off later today as river levels rise.
“Those not impacted by flooding should stay at home today and do their bit to support our emergency services by minimising traffic on the roads.
“We don’t want anyone driving or wading through floodwaters or going out to sightsee. If it’s flooded, forget it.
“It will be a long recovery process ahead and I thank all of the emergency services teams and Council’s disaster management staff who have been working tirelessly to support the community during this hazardous event.”
Those residents whose properties may be inundated are advised to:
- Monitor their situation and be prepared to move to higher ground if required
- Secure objects that could float and stack furniture and possessions as high as possible
- Move and secure chemicals, poisons and garbage
