The City of Swan has celebrated two local champions and a community group and welcomed 71 new Australian citizens in true Aussie style at its annual Australia Day citizenship ceremony at Weeip Park in Midland.
The award winners, new citizens, their families and supporters braved the toasty Perth summer weather today in a celebration of our community, country and achievements.
The new citizens originated from 21 countries across the globe.
Mayor David Lucas said it was always a pleasure to welcome new citizens.
“This annual celebration of Australian culture and those who choose our country as their home is one of the best events on the City’s calendar,” he said.
“It is a true recognition and celebration of our diversity, and a testament to the City being a wonderful place to live.”
The City of Swan also congratulates its 2023 Community Citizen of the Year Award recipients:
- Dr. Pedus Eweama, Community Citizen of the Year
- Helen Maher, Senior Community Citizen of the Year
- Cracovia Club Inc, Active Citizenship (group or event)
Mayor Lucas said the Community Citizen of the Year Awards were an opportunity to recognise the quiet achievers in the community.
“I strongly encourage everyone to consider nominating the people we see in our community who go above and beyond to help others,” he said.
“Unfortunately, this time we did not receive any nominations for the Youth category, but we know there are worthy recipients out there.
“If you see admirable work being done in the community, please nominate those people so they can get the recognition they deserve.”
