On my recent visit to Norfolk Island, I made clear my commitment to you for better communications and an open dialogue around how the Federal Government is working with the community.
In line with this, it was great to hear about the positive discussions which took place this week with the Council of Elders (COE) and Norfolk Island People for Democracy (NIPD).
The discussions on island between COE and NIPD representatives and Administrator Eric Hutchinson and Territories First Assistant Secretary Sarah Vandenbroek were very positive and respectful.
The topics covered were wide-ranging. We all agree more needs to be done to enhance community engagement, increase local decision-making and cultural recognition.
This week’s discussions were part of what will be ongoing and wide-ranging community engagement. I know these matters affect and interest the whole community and I want to give all Norfolk Islanders the opportunity to participate and share their views.
As I said last week, I am keen to work with the community to reinstate a Preamble to the Norfolk Island Act that recognises the relationship of descendants of the settlers from Pitcairn Island with Norfolk Island, their traditions, culture and history.
I look forward to providing more information in the coming months on how you will be able to have your say and put your ideas forward.
Let me be clear – I do recognise these conversations have been a long time coming. Also, we are looking at some big and complicated issues, so there won’t be quick resolutions. But together we can find a better way for the future.
I promise you that the Government – through me, the Administrator and my department – are committed to working with you, the community, to build trust and increase local empowerment and decision-making.
