Sunraysia residents are being urged to ensure their properties are prepared for the upcoming Fire Danger Period.

The Country Fire Authority (CFA) declares an annual Fire Danger Period from October through to April, and it’s important that everyone in our region does their part to reduce the risk of fire ahead of the declaration.

Council’s Local Laws Officers will soon start inspecting properties throughout the municipality to ensure they don’t pose a fire-risk. Penalty notices can be issued to landowners if their land doesn’t comply with Local Laws.

Councillor for Environment and Sustainability Jason Modica said with predictions of a hotter and drier summer than recent years our community should begin preparing their properties early to avoid any potential fire risks.

“It is important we all share the responsibility for fire safety all year round, and now is the perfect time to get into your yard and prepare your property,” Cr Modica said.

Mildura Rural City Council’s Community Local Law No 2 and the Country Fire Authority Act 1958 stipulate that landowners must not allow their properties to become unsightly or a potential fire hazard.

“By keeping grass short, maintaining weeds, pruning overgrown trees, removing rubbish and relocating unused machinery, we not only protect our homes, but we are also protecting our neighbours and their properties,” Cr Modica said.

It is the responsibility of all property owners to keep their land free from fire hazards including clearing properties of long vegetation, rubbish and unused materials.

If residents are concerned about an unsightly land or fire hazard, they are encouraged to contact Council on 03 5018 8100 or visit
