Since 2020, Scotland has set the tone for strong climate leadership as European co-chair of the Under2 Coalition.
First Minister Sturgeon has been an integral part of these efforts, as an important advocate and strong leader for states, regions and devolved governments across the world, in tackling emissions and mitigating the worst impacts of the climate emergency.
She’s sped up our work towards net zero, building a stronger identity for states and regions internationally and pushing for more radical collaboration.
As a host of COP26, First Minister Sturgeon shone a spotlight on states and regions and pushed for global collaboration to turn rhetoric into reality. She called for inclusion and justice to be positioned at the heart of the Coalition’s work – ensuring that no one is left behind on the journey to net zero.
She was one of the drivers behind our 2021 General Assembly at COP26, where it was agreed to move from ambition to action. We’re seeing the impact across the globe, with emissions being cut at state level, green jobs on the increase and new innovations being developed.
First Minister Sturgeon has been invaluable in her support for the Under2 Coalition - particularly over the last three years - and we wish her success for the future.
We look forward to continuing our work with Scotland to meet net zero targets, deliver a just and fair transition and galvinise greater global climate leadership.
The Under2 Coalition is the largest global network of states, regions, provinces and other subnational governments committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.
