The CLP is providing clarity and certainty to the people of Alice Springs with the release of a new Masterplan for the ANZAC Oval Precinct.
The Masterplan outlines the new location to deliver a revised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery of Australia (ATSIAGA) and importantly confirmation the ANZAC Oval will be retained for community use.
The CLP’s ANZAC Oval Masterplan is delivering on the government’s mandate to restore the Territory’s iconic lifestyle, with the Masterplan outlining key infrastructure to include:
ATSIAGA – this will now be located on Wills Terrace at the current car park site towards Todd Street Mall. The design and scale of the gallery will be revised to a three-storey 4,000sqm building to ensure it fits within the wider Masterplan. This will be delivered to a budget of $149 million.
ANZAC Oval – the CLP will reinstate Anzac Oval as a rugby field with restoration works to commence and be complete in time for the rugby season in February 2025.
Additional car parking – car parking will be built to better service Alice Springs’ important community assets including the Totem Theatre, the 50’s plus community centre, the wider ANZAC Oval area.
The Anzac Oval Precinct is expected to be completed in late 2027.
Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said the previous Labor government’s ‘ATSIAGA saga’ had gone on long enough, and the people of Alice Springs deserved clarity around the ANZAC Oval precinct redevelopment.
“We have listened to the people of Alice Springs, and my CLP Government will be delivering on our promise to redevelop the Anzac Oval precinct that meets community expectations while also rebuilding Alice Springs as a great place to live, work and invest,” said Ms Finocchiaro.
“Time and time again, the people of Alice Springs have made it very clear what’s important to them and the previous Labor government did nothing more than ignore their wishes and treat them with contempt.”
Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure, Bill Yan, said this ANZAC Oval Masterplan further reflects the CLP government’s commitment to targeted, sustainable investment and complements the recent Infrastructure Plan announced in Alice Springs recently.
“We’re committed to delivering the Anzac Oval precinct but it’s really important to the community we retain ANZAC Oval for its current use. We are doing this and we are saving ANZAC Oval,” said Mr Yan.
“The CLP Government will be returning ANZAC Oval as the home of rugby while also delivering an ATSIAGA to a revised design and scale ensuring it’s delivered to budget while still upholding the prominence of this important showcase venue for First Nations art.”
Josh Burgoyne, the Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment, said the CLP was taking action and progressing the revised ANZAC Oval Masterplan.
“In line with our recent Infrastructure Plan for Alice Springs, we are taking decisive action to enhance the quality of life for all residents in Alice Springs. By creating vibrant spaces where our community can thrive, we are building a safer, more inclusive place for everyone to enjoy.”
The precinct redevelopment is expected to be completed in late 2027 and Government will be engaging with stakeholders over the coming weeks to inform them of the revised Masterplan.
