Hawkesbury City Councillor Sarah McMahon was elected as the new Mayor of Hawkesbury City at last night’s Council meeting, Tuesday 23 August 2022. Councillor Barry Calvert will remain as Deputy Mayor.

Mayor McMahon said it is “a privilege and an honour to be elected Mayor of Hawkesbury City”.

“I’d like to thank my fellow Councillors for their trust and faith in me to do the job of looking after our beautiful LGA – a place I love,” Mayor McMahon said.

Mayor McMahon pledged to be a strong advocate for the Council to both State and Federal Governments, and to work closely with Councillors and the community on a works program supporting tourism, employment and infrastructure upgrades.

“As 12 leaders, we must be doing all we can to be loud and strong advocates for our community, to the higher levels of government, who have the financial capacity to deliver the social, economic and infrastructure benefits the Hawkesbury needs and deserves,” Mayor McMahon said.

“We must protect our rural amenity, but that does not mean nothing ever changes. We must be an ideas LGA. An innovative LGA. A connected LGA. An inclusive LGA. And one that wants to balance all of our key objectives as per our Community Strategic Plan.

“We need vision. Long term goals and projects that also create income to reinvest into better services. We must continue to support our local small businesses and ensure they are valued and listened to when in need.

“I will be seeking an update on the status of our road repairs and communicate in due course our schedule to get this done. I know this is an issue that is pressing to many, and I will do my best to see this through.”

Mayor McMahon also spoke about her desire for all 12 Councillors to work collaboratively together, for the benefit of the entire community, which is especially important in these current times of recurring natural disasters.

Mayor McMahon’s election follows the resignation of Clr Patrick Conolly as Mayor earlier this month for personal reasons. Clr Conolly will continue in his role as Councillor.

Mayor McMahon paid tribute to Clr Conolly, praising his leadership and his ongoing contribution to the Hawkesbury community.

Mayor McMahon will serve the remainder of the current two-year mayoral term, which will expire in January 2024.
