Cockatoo shot, man charged, NSW

A man has been charged after he allegedly shot a cockatoo with an air rifle at Dee Why overnight.

Officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command were called to a unit block on Fisher Road about 7.30pm (Thursday 9 January 2020), after reports a sulphur-crested cockatoo had been shot.

Police inquiries lead them to a home unit where they arrested an 84-year-old man and seized an air rifle.

The man was taken to Dee Why Police Station and charged with unauthorised possession of a firearm, unauthorised use of a firearm, possess firearm while unlicensed, commit an act of cruelty upon an animal, and two counts of intimidate police.

He was granted bail to appear in Manly Local Court later today (Thursday 9 January 2020).

Witnesses have told police the cockatoo was bleeding when it was seen flying away; it hasn’t been found.
