Coleraine Road landscaping project begins

Southern Grampians Shire Council will commence landscaping works on Coleraine Road in the coming weeks. The project is the second stage of the strategic landscape plan for Hamilton’s major town entrances, as identified in the 2011 Hamilton Structure Plan and follows the landscaping works undertaken on Ballarat Road earlier this year.

The project will see new tree and shrub installations in the median and nature strips located between Market Place and Mt Baimbridge Road. The new plantings will create an avenue effect, with nature strips on both sides of Coleraine road planted with identical species.

It is anticipated that the landscaping will be completed over the spring months and a watering program for the new plantings will continue over the summer period.

The tree and shrub selection for Coleraine Road comply with both VicRoads’s guidelines and Council’s Urban Street Tree Asset Management Plan. The following species have been selected for planting:

• Crepe Myrtle – Lagerstroemia indica ‘Tuscarora’ – Nature strip

• Sensation Box Elder Maple – Acer Negundo – Nature Strip

• Spotted Gum – Corymbia Maculata – Central median

• Coastal Rosemary – Westringia ‘Mundi’ – Central median

Some existing trees will be removed based on advice from the landscape architect and arborist reports.
