Collins Street Bike Lane Voted Down

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government notes the data released in relation to the lack of community support on Hobart City Council’s proposed Collins Street bike lane, with respondents sending a clear message.

Minister for Transport, Eric Abetz, said there had been considerable concerns raised from local business owners and commuters about the planned changes.

“The data has shown that 56 per cent of respondents from the Hobart area are opposed to the idea of bike lanes on Collins Street,” Minister Abetz said

“Putting commuters first is a sensible decision – we have heard this over the course of the ongoing public conversation from business owners to bus drivers united against the idea.

“This is a message loud and clear to the Hobart City Council that the community does not want this.

“Proposals should be determined on their merits and a weighing up of all aspects.

“This is exactly why our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future invests in numerous active transport projects across the State, along with infrastructure upgrades to ensure that Tasmanians have a choice in determining whether they drive, walk, cycle or take public transport.

“I trust that the Councillors will reconsider the community’s views and their response in light of today’s survey results.”
