Coloured hard hats are set to be sported by City of Greater Geelong employees to raise important health awareness in the community.
The new pink and blue personal protective equipment (PPE) items, which comply with Australian standards, are first being rolled out in our City Works department. This includes the road maintenance and construction teams.
Crew members will be able to customise their hard hats with special logos for breast cancer and prostate cancer awareness.
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in Australia and prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men.
The uniform changes were put in place after the idea was suggested during an employee consultation process.
Along with the hard hats, a new pink and orange hi-vis shirt has been introduced to the City’s available workwear options for all employees.

Council is continually looking for clever and creative ways to drive change and spread important health messages in our community.
This initiative, which has been led by our City Works team, is a new and visible way we can show our support of breast and prostate cancer awareness.

This is a great way to raise awareness of breast and prostate cancer and I hope community members who spot the PPE book in a check-up with their GP.
I commend the employee consultation process that inspired this idea and look forward to seeing the colourful PPE in the community.
