Townsville City Council’s Planning and Development Committee today recommended a Material Change of Use (MCU) for a vet practice in Kirwan.
The MCU was submitted for a building on Thuringowa Drive that was previously a medical centre.
Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Les Walker said the proposed vet clinic would help the local economy.
“This vet clinic employs up to four nurses and receptionists and two vets can work together in the clinic at the same time,” Cr Walker said.
“The vet clinic will only operate Monday through to Saturday and won’t open on Sundays and public holidays to minimise any impact to nearby residents.
“The clinic will also have 11 parking spaces to accommodate for customers and staff.”
Cr Walker said another condition for the MCU is provisions to keep noise to a minimum.
“This vet practice is proposing to offer limited after-hours services to its customers and there may be instances where animals will stay overnight,” Cr Walker said.
“The clinic has included video surveillance cameras to monitor the animals and will sound-proof the overnight room to minimise any impact to residents.”
Local Councillor Russ Cook said the vet clinic is a welcome addition to Kirwan.
“Kirwan and the surrounding area are rapidly expanding and there is a growing demand for services like vet clinics,” Cr Cook said.
“It’s exciting to see applications for small businesses like this vet clinic in the area.”
The MCU application went through a public notification period with two submissions received – Council has included a number of conditions to address these submissions.
The application will go to Full Council for consideration on 23 July.
