SAPOL are pleased to share that Community Constable Dean Walker was a finalist for the 2023 Premier’s Award which recognises an outstanding achievement and service of an extraordinary Aboriginal South Australian who has made a significant contribution to the lives of Aboriginal people in South Australia.
Dean was nominated by the South Australian Cross Border family domestic violence program. This program is designed to assist men who are on parole and are under mandated court and correctional orders to attend services to help address offending behaviours.
The nomination recognised the significant contributions that Dean has made, outside of his hours of work as a police officer, assisting in the delivery of these programs in the community by sharing his stories and motivating the men in the program to make better choices in life.
The program recognised Dean’s selfless dedication to helping Aboriginal men by providing guidance and support to people who have been through the justice system.
Dean has worked as a Community Constable for 19 years and is currently based at Coober Pedy Police Station in the state’s Far North.
He acknowledges his role in South Australia Police has assisted him in wanting to be a part of this program, as he sees it as a way that he can help other community members change behaviours and ensure safer communities for everyone to live in.
All of South Australia Police acknowledge and congratulate Dean on his nomination, and his commitment to closing the gap and building strong networks and partnerships with the Aboriginal Communities in South Australia. South Australia Police is committed to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to deliver police services and create genuine working relationships that recognise the importance of reconciliation and acknowledge their cultural rights.
